Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed FullThrottle.in 20-Oct.-2008

Are you fat, bald and filthy rich, with a penchant for super fast luxury cars? Are you willing to dish out Rs. 2.5 Crores (ex-showroom Delhi) on a set of new wheels? Well if you are, then you might consider the world's fastest production sedan, the Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed which was recently launched in India. This four door version of the Bentley Continental GT Speed is the kind of car for which one will have to come up with a whole new set of vocabularies to describe.

It's hard to tell the Speed from the regular Flying Spur, because visual differences are very subtle. In the front the chrome radiator grille is now more vertical with a squarer edge, the headlights are surrounded by chrome bezels and the colossal air intakes are now wider and more prominent with a black matrix pattern to give the Speed a totally menacing look. The rear sports a redesigned bumper with wraparound chrome trim, chrome tail lamps bezels and a pair of wider sport exhaust tail pipes. The 2,940kg Flying Spur Speed sits on a set of 20-inch alloys with Pirelli P-Zeroes made exclusively for the model. Customers will have an option of going either for the silver or dark tungsten finish alloys.

The term 'luxurious' is a gross understatement when it comes to summing up the interior of the Speed in one word. Let's just say that there is no difference between the interior of a Boeing Business Jet and the Flying Spur Speed. The piano black and dark stained Burr Walnut veneers, leather wrapped steering wheel and the sea of beige takes a massive toll on ones aesthetic senses. And then there is the optional Naim audio system with its 1100Watt amplifier which is touted as the best automotive audio system in the world. The Speed boasts of a more than generous level of equipment, almost everything comes standard.

Made for the (crazy) select few who think that the standard Continental Flying Spur is a bit mild-mannered for their taste, the Speed brings to the table a mind-boggling 608PS and a tarmac ripping torque figure of 750Nm. Now, that's serious power! Using a 6-speed automatic gearbox, Speed's tweaked W12 engine is capable of a maximum speed of 320kmph and takes only a paltry 4.8 seconds to catapult the near 3 ton behemoth to 100kmph from a standing stop! The combination of a 10mm lower ride height along with more low-end power, stiffer suspension setup and optimum steering feel makes the Speed a hoot to drive. And if the driver still craves for more, all he needs to do is put the car into Dynamic mode which will ensure increased wheel slip at higher speeds as well as speedier reintroduction of torque once the traction control system kicks in.

Bentley is bullish about the Indian market, which it hopes will become it's second largest in Asia after China, and to prove its seriousness, it also plans to launch all future Bentley models in India simultaneously with the international markets.
